She first went to teachers college, then did a year at the craft college. This led to two years teaching silk screen printing and textile painting at the craft school, which at that time was called the handicraft branch. "I had a teachers license, but it wasnt the right time of year to be teaching and I had a new baby. While she was teaching at the craft school she met and married potter John Shaw. In the early years, the craft school was in different government departments, notes Shaw.
