Last time while the shelter was closed in August, dogs picked up in Waterbury were brought to area shelters until it reopened in early September. The day it reopened, those dogs were transported back to Waterbury and dogs who had been there the longest were killed to make room for the new dogs. CARLSBAD, N. M. (AP) - Carlsbad's animal shelter will benefit from the sales of new 2011 calendars features cats, dogs and other critters. The calendar was the brainchild of the president of the shelter's board of directors, Lynne Pitcaithley, who had read about other shelters doing such projects. It's the fourth year for calendars to help Noah's Ark animal shelter in the southern New Mexico city. The project starts each spring, when pet owners pay $7 to enter each pet's photo. Pitcaithley turned to Sam Christensen, assistant professor of digital media at New Mexico State University's Carlsbad campus, for design and layout. Pitcaithley said most photos that come in show dogs and cats, but there also have been lizards, parrots, a turtle and a snake.
